Featured Early Career Research: Aaron McGregor and Scottish Fiddling

Aaron McGregor completed his PhD at the University of Glasgow under the supervision of John Butt and David McGuinness in 2020.  His research into the historic Scottish violin spans the 16th to the 18th century, and sheds new light on the emergence of a distinctive Scottish fiddle style.

He also performs as an historically-informed fiddlers as part of the chamber ensemble Scots Baroque.  For more information see the Scots Baroque website.

Dr McGregor’s Historical Music of Scotland website contains details of around 3500 tunes from early violin manuscripts, compiled as part of his research into this area.
